SEO for a blog – Step#1. Choose long tail keywords
You must make a detailed plan of the article before you start writing it. I do not like to do this, but it is really important and necessary. First you need to conduct a study of keywords on the topic and choose 1-2 keywords with a long tail (consisting of several words). Such long tail keywords have less competition and it will be easier for you to get the article to the first page of search results. In the process of analyzing keywords, I advise you to pay attention only to those phrases that are searched on the Internet at least 100-200 times a month. Ideal when people search your long tail keywords from 1000 and up once a month.
To search for keywords, you can use a free keyword search in Google Adwords. This service is intended for advertisers, but you can also get approximate statistics on keywords. If you are making a website not in English, but in another language and you want to select a specific region, do not forget to specify this in the search settings. You can read more about using this service on the page Semantic Core of the Site – Keyword Selection. And these are the actions that I recommend to do immediately after creating your site. Before you start writing articles or ordering them from copywriters.
SEO for a blog – Step#2. Add your keywords to the text of the article
SEO is not 100% accurate science, but currently there are a number of rules that are best followed to advance an article in search results.
Placement of keywords within the article
At the time of writing, the key phrase should appear in the text several times. No need to try to insert keywords in each paragraph and, especially, in each sentence. The entry of keywords should be natural, because first of all you write not for search engine robots, but for real people. Your article should be long enough and detailed. For example, Google prefers articles of 2,000–2,500 words and more. At the same time, it is important to avoid “water” (unnecessary information that can be excluded without prejudice to the topic of the article).
In other words, if you do not have enough information to write a long article, it is better not to stretch it artificially. The article should give visitors the information for which they opened your page. Your article should be easy to read, and the text should be divided into small paragraphs. The article should have a clear structure and, preferably, a table of contents. At the same time, it is important to place keywords (direct and indirect entry) in the subtitles, which are denoted by tags H2, H3, etc.
Placement of keywords in the title and description
According to the rules of SEO site optimization, you must use your keywords in the Title of the article, preferably in the first 50 characters. There is nothing criminal if you pre-read the headlines of similar articles from your competitors. But I do not advise you to completely copy the title, it is better to make it unique. You should also place your keywords in the article Description. It is better if the entry of the keywords there is diluted (several additional words are added between the keywords or synonyms are used).
Typically, search engines use Title and Description to determine the relevance of your article and create a snippet (a short fragment of your article on the search results page). Therefore, it is very important that the name of your article and its description allow a person to understand that he will find the necessary answers on your website. If you use WordPress for blogging, I recommend installing the Yoast SEO plugin (there is a free version with reduced functionality). This plugin allows you to analyze text in many ways and allows you to edit the Title and Description. More information can be found on the page Yaost SEO Settings – the best SEO WordPress plugin. The same plugin automatically analyzes your text for SEO (see screenshot below).
Check for keywords in the URL of article
Each article on your site has a unique link (URL). And it is very desirable that the test also contains keywords. After properly configured, WordPress automatically creates links based on the title of the article. But if you changed the Title while writing this article, do not forget to edit the text of link too.
SEO for a blog – Step#3. Optimization of pictures and videos
Search engines love long and informative articles. However, only textual information is not enough: the article should contain photos, drawings, graphics or videos. Such content is considered to be of higher quality and allows you to better open the topic of the article. The presence of thematic photos, schematic images or video has a good effect on behavioral factors. Visitors to the site will spend more time on the page and are more likely to scroll through the page to the end. Agree, it’s boring and not interesting to see only solid text on the page. Nowadays, many people perceive visual content better, so some textual information can be duplicated by charts and drawings. Especially valuable may be relevant statistical information. People love numbers and comparisons, so do not deprive them of this opportunity.
Optimization of graphic images is the assignment of the name of the picture, in which there are keywords of the article. Do not forget to fill in the “Alt” field while adding pictures to the page of your article. You must remember that search engines do not see the picture as people do. Therefore, in the Alt field, you can write a description of what is depicted in the photo, figure or diagram. This description should also include keywords. Another way to optimize the site is to reduce the size of the image. Here I mean not the physical size of the visible image, but the reduction in the size of the image in Kb. To do this, you can use third-party software before uploading the image to the hosting or use special plug-ins that will do the main work for you. You will learn more about this on the page: Image Optimization for WordPress.
First, a little bit of terminology. Internal links refer to links from one page of your site to another page. External links are inbound and outbound. Inbox is a link to your website (main page, section or specific article) on other websites. Outgoing external links are links to other sites on the pages of your site. Such links are best used in minimal amounts, especially when your blog is still young and not very authoritative. There are special plugins that help to hide outgoing external links from search engines. Read more about it on the page: How to hide outgoing external links on blog pages.
If you’ve initially started creating your blog correctly, you have a starting list of 50-100 long tail keywordsfor writing articles. Therefore, do not forget to use keywords from other articles in the text when writing a new article and add relevant links. This process is called internal linking and is very effective. Linking allows you to quickly index new pages on your blog and is well rated by search engines. In simple terms, any link to a blog’s page gives this page greater importance in the eyes of search engines (yes, I’m aware that search engines have no eyes). It is better to add to the article links to those blog pages that you consider most important for the promotion of the website.
When visitors to your blog see a link in an article on an interesting topic, they also open a new page and spend more time on your website. This increases the likelihood that they will click on the ad unit or buy something through affiliate links. As you can see, internal linking is not only a way to optimize a site for search engines, but also one of the most effective ways to increase earnings from the site. To avoid searching for the right article with right link each time, I recommend creating a separate page with all the important links and anchors (link text). You can find my useful life hack on the page: Creating a list of links for internal linking.
Internal links are good because you can add them to the blog in any quantity and for free. However, the value of such links for search engines is less compared to external links. Therefore, in any case, you should make an effort to get the largest possible link mass to your blog. The more other sites linking to your blog, the more credible your website is. And the more often it will be shown on the first page of the search results. It is important to remember about the quality of the links. Links from popular websites that have a similar theme to your blog will be most useful. Getting external links is one of the most difficult and most important tasks of SEO site optimization. There are several basic ways to get external links to a blog.
You can place a link to your blog for money using specialized services. However, the quality of such a link may not be very high. Many sites sell dozens and hundreds of links and thus turn into link trash. A more sensible way to get inbound links is guest posting. You should search for popular sites on your topic and offer them to post your new and interesting article, which will contain one or two links to your blog. Not all sites will agree, but the option is really working and effective. In some cases, you may be required for a certain amount of money. If the website is really popular and authoritative, and the amount is not too high, you can agree.
The third way to get external links – cooperation with blogs of similar subjects. It is believed that reciprocal links are not very well rated by search engines, so the option is not as effective as the previous ones. Finally, external links to your blog will appear naturally. This is my favorite option, because it is completely free. Continue to fill your blog with interesting and useful articles and over time visitors to your site will share a link to your articles on forums, on other sites and on social media.
In 2019-2020, links from social networks are becoming increasingly important. Integrated blog promotion includes creating groups and pages on social networks and maintaining activity in them. Do not forget to publish announcements of new articles with links in your profiles or groups. Invite friends and acquaintances to join your group or subscribe to your blog profile. This not only makes it possible to get additional external links to the blog, but also allows you to increase the number of visitors. In fact, I still rarely use this source to promote my websites. But I could be convinced of the effectiveness of this type of SEO on the example of my friends’ websites.
SEO for a blog – Step#5. Adapt your website to smartphones and tablets
As of the summer of 2019, about half of the traffic on the Internet is mobile traffic. Search engines take this into account, so if your blog is not adapted for mobile devices, you will initially be in lower positions than competitors with adaptive layout. In fact, today there is no big problem in making the website convenient for viewing on mobile devices. The easiest way to do this is to use modern responsive WordPress themes. If you are just starting to make your blog, I advise you to choose the fastest and easiest topics (List of quick and responsive WordPress themes). You can use free versions of such WordPress themes, which have some limitations regarding flexible customization and design.
But if you have 50-100 USD and you are confident in the success of your blog, I advise you to immediately purchase premium versions of WordPress themes, which usually include developer support. Another advantage of the premium WordPress theme is the ability to disable unused website modules, which speeds up page loading. Fast loading pages – one of the advantages of a blog over competitors. Therefore, do not make the popular mistake of novice bloggers who want to make a website beautiful and bright, not fast. You can make a website beautiful after it has a sufficient number of visitors. Until then, it’s better to focus on the convenience, usefulness and speed of loading pages. By the way, on the page How to speed up a WordPress website – Step-by-step guide you will find the most relevant and effective ways to speed up your blog.
Thus, the work on SEO site optimization includes the main methods of internal and external optimization, each of which has a positive effect on the promotion of your blog in search results. You should remember that it is better to write fewer articles, but pay attention to SEO. After all, even a very good article is difficult to put in the TOP of the search results, if it is not optimized for search engines and does not have incoming external links. Even experienced SEO specialists can use in practice not all ways of promotion, but choose the most effective ones for a particular project. So try all of these methods and pay special attention to those that bring you maximum effect with the least amount of time and money. Good luck!
